World Youth Day Madrid 2011 Submitted on 11 Apr 10
World Youth Day is one of the most important legacies left to the youth by Pope John Paul II.
In 1984, he declared 1985 to be a jubilee year for the Church, and he invited young people to
travel to Rome for Palm Sunday. Since then, World Youth Day has been held on
an annual basis, with international gatherings every 2-3 years. Kildare and Leighlin had 136 pilgrims registered
for the last international gathering in Sydney, 2008 22 years will have passed....World Youth Day will return
to Spain after Santiago de Compostela was its venue in 1989, where John Paul II met with more than 500,000
young people from all over the world.
Now its the turn of Madrid where they expect to attract 1,500,000 pilgrims to the city.
During the week pilgrims can experience some of the hospitality, culture and social life of the city.
The programme begins on Tuesday 16th August and runs until Sunday 21st August.
We will therefore be leaving Dublin on 15th August and returning on the 22nd of August
(The above dates of travel may change slightly)
